EXAPTATION OF A SOFTWARE
-----------------------------------
░░░░░░░ THEORETICAL REFERENCES
"The concept of exaptation was introduced by paleontologists Stephen J. Gould and Elisabeth S. Vrba in 1982, but it has a long history dating back to Charles Darwin's response in 1872 to zoologist George Mivart's objections to the alleged inability of natural selection to account for the incipient stages of particularly complex natural structures. With the neologism pre-adaptation Darwin introduced the possibility that in nature the relationship between organs and functions was potentially redundant, so that a trait that had developed for a certain adaptive reason could be co-opted or converted to a function even completely independent of the previous one. This functional co-option was renamed exaptation by Gould and Vrba to indicate how organisms often opportunistically readapt structures already available for novel functions".
